Chris Botti, "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas"

While this brilliant holiday tune is often taken at a cheery tempo today, it was written for the only downbeat scene in the movie Meet Me In St. Louis (where it causes a small child to break into hysterics and take down a snowman!) and ended up speaking to all the families who were separated at Christmas by World War II. Chris Botti, always the roughest of smooth jazzers, gets to the melancholy core of the song by channeling the introspective trumpet style of his heroes, Miles Davis and Chet Baker. – Nick Dedina, Google Music
