Matt Nathanson: Modern Lover

San Francisco troubadour Matt Nathanson has a knack for crafting adult alternative tunes that match introspection with sing-along choruses. Nathanson originally gained notoriety as a live performer, where his rare talent for improvised comedic barbs and original yet absurd cover-versions complemented his anthemic folk rock. Nathanson released a number of albums on a major label before, ironically, breaking out big when he jumped over to the indie Vanguard Records. Previously his songs were promoted on myriad TV shows but in 2008 his single “Come On Get Higher” got added to so many FM rock stations that it eventually racked up sales of two million copies and earned the album Some Mad Hope major sales in the process.

Matt Nathanson stopped by the Google campus for an open-hearted interview and a rollicking acoustic performance, throwing out one-liners, using every one of the “seven words” that George Carlin brought to our attention and proving that you don’t have to plug in to rock. Watch the him perform "Come Get Higher," which was especially for Google and Magnifier, so enjoy. -- Nick Dedina
