Deborah Cox, “Fine and Mellow”

R&B vocalist Deborah Cox puts a roadhouse blues spin on the Billie Holiday original “Fine and Mellow.” The Canadian diva captures the strange upbeat quality that the ever masochistic Lady Day placed into a song that starts out with the lyrics, “My man don’t love me/ treats me oh so mean.” Cox recorded an entire tribute to Dinah Washington a few years back; maybe one on Holiday is next. – Nick Dedina
