New York City’s Smif-n-Wessun -- a.k.a. Cocoa Brovaz -- is one of those those older rap acts that’s rugged by nature. Rappers Tek and Steele enjoy work boots, jeans and face tattoos -- and the sturdy thump of “Monumental,” helmed by Pete Rock. The famed producer from hip-hop’s golden era is still kicking out comfort food for purists, and if “Monumental” differs from the grainy jazz loops all these artists preferred in the early/mid-‘90s, it doesn’t by much. –
