Before DJ/producer Miguel Migs became the poster boy for his signature blend of soulful house, he played guitar in a roots reggae band in Santa Cruz. In Washington D.C., meanwhile, Meshell Ndegeocello paid dues on the go-go scene before birthing a string of neo-soul and dance hits. Appropriately, Migs and Meshell’s “Close Your Eyes” -- one of two collaborations from the pair on Migs’ sparkling third album
Outside the Skyline -- is a buoyant, deep house-meets-R&B lullaby that continues both musicians’ instinct for transcending genres and awakening spirits on dance floors. Meshell beckons, “You think there’s nothing new under the sun/ And there’s a piece of you coming undone” as the percussive bassline triggers an ever mellow, toe-tapping trance. --
