For the locked-in-his-bedroom (listen for his door opening at song’s end) and landlocked Kansan Jordan Geiger, naming his solo recording project Hospital Ships might be a bit of a misnomer, but his second album is a buoyant craft. With a pedigree that includes stints in Midwest bands like Minus Story, Shearwater, The Appleseed Cast, even Okkervil River, Hospital Ships draws its bubblegum pop core from a bit further south: Oklahoma City’s The Flaming Lips to be exact. The drums burst and snap with all the concuss of Steven Drozd circa-Transmissions From the Satellite Heart, making Geiger’s layers of vocal harmonies with piano and toy store xylophone lines all cohere. But such bright sounds don’t make the “please please please” plea of the chorus any less heartrending. – Andy Beta
