Ghostpoet, “Cash and Carry Me Home”

Yes, people will still be getting loaded in the future, and when they stumble through urban landscapes filled with (presumably) scary robots and bad air, it might sound like this ode to inebriation from Mercury Prize-nominated Ghostpoet. The London emcee is mush-mouthed and disoriented as he “wonders what shenanigans have brought me here,” and there is a lonely pang in his voice when he pleads for a passerby to “just carry me home.” The sub-bass and pulsating synths channel the precision and solitude of dubstep, but his lyrics recall the sad drunk pathos of early Tom Waits. – Sam Chennault
