Chantal Claret: A Soul Blues Clarion Call

An über-sassy redhead blessed with a commanding voice, Chantal Claret has wasted little time in establishing her newfound solo career. After spending the last decade fronting New York glitz-rockers Morningwood, she quickly went to work on her debut album for The End Records. Though longtime fans will surely recognize Claret's unmistakable vocal gifts, The One, the Only… represents an audacious new direction for the singer: hyper-charged soul-rock that's simpatico with the retro stylings of Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings, Alabama Shakes, Black Joe Lewis and the late Amy Winehouse.

Ditching the Strokes-like guitar attack of her former band for a horn section that punches and stabs, "Bite Your Tongue" goes from manic to flat-out frenzied in just under three minutes. The tune's catchy chorus is a true wall-of-sound, with an aggressive thrust that feels lovingly borrowed from Eddie Floyd's Southern soul classic "Knock on Wood." It's one of those super-smart little touches that guarantee we'll be hearing a lot more from this talented singer.
