Though longtime fans will surely recognize Claret's unmistakable vocal gifts, The One, the Only… represents an audacious new direction for the singer: hyper-charged soul-rock that's simpatico with the retro stylings of Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings, Alabama Shakes, Black Joe Lewis and the late Amy Winehouse.Ditching the Strokes-like guitar attack of her former band for a horn section that punches and stabs, "Bite Your Tongue" goes from manic to flat-out frenzied in just under three minutes. The tune's catchy chorus is a true wall-of-sound, with an aggressive thrust that feels lovingly borrowed from Eddie Floyd's Southern soul classic "Knock on Wood."
