SoCal's Nick Waterhouse is committed to the '50s rock 'n' roll aesthetic of short, quick bursts of energy. But he accomplishes a lot on "Is That Clear": a rambling, rockabilly guitar intro followed by stride piano and a pumping saxophone, and then Waterhouse's growls while beehived ladies sing the chorus in the background. It's all encased in a Phil Spector-like wall of sound. –
