The New Mastersounds, “Can You Get It”

The New Mastersounds, from the Yorkshire city of Leeds, are part of a vast British network tied together through their love of classic American R&B, funk and soul-jazz. What sets The New Mastersounds apart is their expertise; the keyboard-driven collective comes on like a juiced-up, highly kinetic, New Orleans version of Booker T. & the MGs, and their jazzy style has earned them praise from their idols -- Maceo Parker, The Neville Brothers, The J.B.’s, and The Meters, among others. Though singers such as Corinne Bailey Rae often sit in, the band members handle vocal duties themselves on their latest, Break For The Border. This club remix of the album cut “Can You Get It” adds in slamming electro-beats, strips the smokin’ organ work down and highlights the vocals, which offer a manifesto of U.K. fan boy passion. The students have become the teachers. -- Nick Dedina
