The Mekons, “Space In Your Face”

The most up-tempo number on The Mekons’ latest, Ancient and Modern, this snarling tune is hardly upbeat. The narrator may be Clarence Darrow and/or he may be dabbling in the occult, but he sure sounds bitter when he cries, “I was tempted to believe,” as he tries to sober up in a Turkish bath. This is what sums up The Mekons’ brilliance: they can make a rousing anthem out of doubt. – Tim Quirk
