Lucia Comnes began her career with the acclaimed Bulgarian vocal choir Kitka and her 2008 solo debut presents spirited interpretations of traditional Eastern European, Celtic and Near Eastern idioms. “Gigile” provides a synthesis of the solid musicianship and far-ranging sensibilities at work with Comnes and her trio. This traditional Albanian love song weaves Comnes’ violin and plaintive vocals and is tastefully balanced with regular trio mates Sean Stillinger on bass and Aharon Wheels Bolsta on percussion along with guests, Pat Duffey on guitar and Dan Cantrell on accordion. -- Catherine M.
